Release Notes:
Michael Johnson was born to Sam Johnson and Karen McGhee on March 23,
1994. He comes from a long line of singers and artists such as (Sam
Johnson a Jazz Musician, Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band and Gospel
Icon Daryl Cooley). It was destined that Michael would aspire to
become a singer himself. Having this wide range of musical talents in
his family is a plus because it pushes Michael to strive for musical
success. However, growing up in the heart of South Central Los
Angeles has had its challenges and share of negative influences.
Michael's parents realized the significance of keeping him focused
and out of trouble. Attending church faithfully, playing basketball
and skateboarding contributed to channeling Michael's energy into
something positive. At the age of four, Michael began singing and
performing at church. He sang in the church choir every Sunday and
performed at various functions around the city. The congregation and
audiences were blown away by the range and strength of Michael's
voice. Michael was later introduced to his cousin "Tee-Low" from the
hit R & B group "Next". Tee-Low then phoned Super Producer/Song
Writer Walter Lil Walt Millsap III of Conjunction Ent. for an
audition by phone. Walter felt that Michaels audition carried over
only okay. It was eight months later, on the evening of Michaels aunt
Carolyn White's live recording at West Angeles C.O.G.I.C that Walter
was blown away by Michaels live performance. That evening after the
live recording Michael was introduced to Walter. Coincidentally,
Walter and Michaels family fellowshipped in the same church and
Michael's father was the organ instructor for Walter in his youth. It
was that moment Walter stamped Michael as Lil' Mike, the next Michael
Jackson. Super Producer/Song Writer Walter Lil Walt Millsap III and
Song Writer Candice Nelson, who have collaborated together producing
and writing for artist such as Alicia Keys, Brandy, J-Lo, Mary J.
Blige, Brooke Valentine and many more began working on Lil' Mike's
career. One evening at Walters office, Walter and Candice asked Lil
Mike to sit and jot down all the things that have happened to him in
his life. From that list Walter and Candice began developing Lil
Mikes unique style. Walter provided vocal instructions and recorded
and produced ten songs for Lil Mikes demo. After the demos were
recorded, Walter phoned A&R, Jay Brown of Island Def Jam Records. Jay
Brown then flew from New York to Los Angeles to meet Lil Mike
personally. Jay Brown was so impressed by Michaels voice and demo
presentation that he phoned CEOs L.A. Reid and Jay-Z to set up a show
case. Days later Walter and Lil Mike flew to New York for the show
case. L.A. Reid, Jay-Z and Def Jam staff were immensely blown away
and immediately offered Lil Mike a contract with Def Jam.
